The Speed of Trust: The One Thing that Changes Everything by Stephen M.R. Covey
Facilitated By: Sara Pattow, Vice President Operations, SEEK Careers/Staffing, Inc.
From Publishers Weekly
Trust is so integral to our relationships that we often take it for granted, yet in an era marked by business scandals and a desire for accountability this book by leadership expert Covey is a welcome guide to nurturing trust in our professional and personal lives. Drawing on anecdotes and business cases from his years as CEO of the Covey Leadership Center (which was worth $160 million when he orchestrated its 1997 merger with Franklin Quest to form Franklin Covey), the author effectively reminds us that there's plenty of room for improvement on this virtue. Following a touching foreword by father Stephen R. Covey (author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and related books), the junior Covey outlines 13 behaviors of trust-inspiring leaders, such as demonstrating respect, creating transparency, righting wrongs, delivering results and practicing accountability. Covey's down-to-earth approach and disarming personal stories go a long way to establish rapport with his reader, though the book's length and occasional lack of focus sometimes obscure its good advice. Philosophy and History
Current launched this reading group to encourage young professionals to pursue professional development through reading. The program offers participants a chance to network and to reflect on leadership, best practices, and other special topics pertinent to a variety of industries. The program is also intended to provide an opportunity for young professionals to interact with area leaders who have significant work experience and are generally more advanced in their careers.
Program Design
Each month, one book will be chosen for discussion. The great thing about our program is that reading the book isn’t required! Please note that if you are interested in the book but couldn’t get around to finishing it in time for the meeting, it is still OKAY and ENCOURAGED that you attend.
An area professional will lead the group in discussion, highlighting key points in the reading and helping the group relate by providing examples from his or her own career. We will discuss the general theme of the book, how the topic is played out in our own workplaces, and our opinions on the author’s advice.
Books and speakers will be selected in advance, so if you need more time to complete the reading, you have notice of what is to come and can determine which future sessions you would like to attend. You are welcome to bring friends and coworkers who are not members of Current. RSVPs are requested due to limited space.
Book Discounts
The Reader’s Loft offers a 15% discount for all Current reading group purchases, but they may not carry our books in stock. Please call ahead.
